Outdoor Discoveries

What originally was a news section for the rest of the website soon became a place for me to write about human-powered wanderings in the countryside. Photography inspires me to get out there, mostly on foot these days, though cycling got me started. Musings on the wider context of outdoor activity complete the picture, so I hope that there is something of interest in all that you find here. Thank you for coming!

Midge forecasting

6th September 2006

Midges can be a right nuisance to walkers in Scotland but they also exist in Ireland as well. Neverthless, the Scottish ones have a reputation of legendary proportions. I have been irritated by them but I thinks that others suffer more, some so much so that they are put off Scotland for life. Midgeforecast.co.uk then is a useful weapon in the armoury of the outdoors enthusiast. The forecast was developed by scientists at the University of Edinburgh and uses weather forecasting and midge traps to inform visitors of the pest level of these blighters so that any discomfort can be avoided.
