Outdoor Discoveries

What originally was a news section for the rest of the website soon became a place for me to write about human-powered wanderings in the countryside. Photography inspires me to get out there, mostly on foot these days, though cycling got me started. Musings on the wider context of outdoor activity complete the picture, so I hope that there is something of interest in all that you find here. Thank you for coming!

A very stormy day

18th January 2007

The storms that have hit the UK and other parts of Europe today have more than made their presence felt through the inconvenience and damage that they have caused. I have seen mature trees with branches having been snapped off like matchsticks and hard of local roads being blocked by fallen trees.

However, it is the travel chaos on the A34 near Alderley Edge that most impacted on me. Nevertheless, I was lucky enough to catch a bus home following a 30 minute wait. An electricity outage that took out a number of traffic lights was partly to blame for the said thoroughfare taking on the appearance of a car park. Other road closures added traffic when it was least needed: high winds had forced closure of sections of the M6 and M56. It is at times like these that travel websites come into their own so long as they are not suffering from the same sort of load as the congested roads. The Highways England website was one of these but the BBC came to the rescue with their offering: Travel News.
