Outdoor Discoveries

What originally was a news section for the rest of the website soon became a place for me to write about human-powered wanderings in the countryside. Photography inspires me to get out there, mostly on foot these days, though cycling got me started. Musings on the wider context of outdoor activity complete the picture, so I hope that there is something of interest in all that you find here. Thank you for coming!

Walking Northern Ireland

14th March 2007

My copy of the latest issue of Walking World Ireland dropped through my letter box yesterday and included was a leaflet extolling the virtues of walking in Northern Ireland and publicising the useful website that they have for the purpose. It seems that the Peace Process has turned NI into something of a tourist destination and walking would add nicely to this. The main focus of their efforts seems to be their waymarked ways but these do seem to offer a lot and I wouldn’t mind checking the amount of off-road walking on offer. Their counterparts south of the border are blighted by road walking sections so it could only be a good thing if a bit of healthy competition got authorities in the Republic to sort out the ever thorny issue of access to the countryside; it looks a right mess at the moment.
