Outdoor Discoveries

What originally was a news section for the rest of the website soon became a place for me to write about human-powered wanderings in the countryside. Photography inspires me to get out there, mostly on foot these days, though cycling got me started. Musings on the wider context of outdoor activity complete the picture, so I hope that there is something of interest in all that you find here. Thank you for coming!

Travelling in the Yorkshire Dales

10th April 2007

I spent a lot of my Easter weekend in the Yorkshire Dales so a few transport links were to prove useful in my planning. One that really helped was DalesBus. Not all of the high season weekend services are running yet but a few have started up and there are a number that run all year round too. One service that has returned after a winter hiatus is the very useful Settle-Malham 809 service. Another service that proved its worth was Dales and District‘s 156/7 between Hawes and Northallerton and it’s one that runs all year round. DalesRail is also beginning to start up again for this year and it looks promising. Another very useful port of call in North Yorkshire County Council’s bus timetable page. The timetables themselves are due for updating as the council is making a number of changes to its tendered services. For instance, the service between Garsdale and Hawes is changing from being timetabled to being demand responsive; you need to book it the night before which makes it less accessible in my eyes. However, there’s little point in running empty buses in remote areas so this could explain the decision.
