Outdoor Discoveries

What originally was a news section for the rest of the website soon became a place for me to write about human-powered wanderings in the countryside. Photography inspires me to get out there, mostly on foot these days, though cycling got me started. Musings on the wider context of outdoor activity complete the picture, so I hope that there is something of interest in all that you find here. Thank you for coming!

Digital mapping for Éire

14th May 2007

While mainland Britain is well supplied with digital mapping, it seems that Éire is not as well endowed. Nevertheless, Ordnance Survey Ireland does offer a product that it calls Trailmaster for selected parts of the country with each DVD in the four strong series costing €99.00 on sale from its online store (the U.K.’s Ordnance Survey offers them for £75 each). While coverage is not exhaustive, the lion’s share of country is covered by the East, South, West and Shannon DVD’s. The mapping uses the 1:50000 scale that is also available in paper form as the Discovery series. Given the small size of my collection of Irish maps, the digital option does look to be a tempting one.
