Outdoor Discoveries

What originally was a news section for the rest of the website soon became a place for me to write about human-powered wanderings in the countryside. Photography inspires me to get out there, mostly on foot these days, though cycling got me started. Musings on the wider context of outdoor activity complete the picture, so I hope that there is something of interest in all that you find here. Thank you for coming!

Linear walking in Lakeland

8th May 2007

Before I left Keswick on Friday, I did a spot of shopping in Booth’s supermarket before I caught an open top bus to Penrith. Booth’s also sells books and magazines as well as the usual supermarket wares and I picked up a Cicerone guide entitled Tour of the Lake District. Being on the look out for linear walks in the Lake District, this slim volume has given me a few ideas. In the main, the sections are relatively short but they can be combined with each other to make a bigger days out. The main route is lower level but higher level options are also presented as are ideas for short walks. Also in the linear walking theme, I found a site dedicated to the Cumbria Way, another lower level amble among the fells, and there were more concerned with the Allerdale Ramble. With these ideas, I should be able to plan some point-to-point strolls for any opportunities that might arise.
