The heat is on…
3rd June 2007As if to prove, how quickly weather can change in Britain, Thursday’s unseasonal coolness was replaced by Friday’s summer warmth; it was as if someone flicked a switch at midnight on the 1st of June. It does, however, bring to mind one of the major challenges of summertime walking: dealing with the heat. My ideal temperature range for walking is 15-20 degrees Celsius so anything above that comes with a certain amount of discomfort. Cloudy skies do cool things down but we all like sunny days, don’t we? Speaking of sunshine, the strength of the sun means that covering up is a must (I’m fair skinned so tanning is never going to happen) as is the use of a decent sun lotion. Also, having access sufficient water is another necessity made more important by water loss through sweating. And with the predicted effects of global warming, a siesta when the midday sun is doing its worst seems a compelling idea that still gives us good morning and evening walking…
