Outdoor Discoveries

It's amazing how things develop. After all, this blog started out as a news section for the rest of the website. With encouragement from readers, it has become a place for relating my countryside wanderings and musings about the world of outdoor activity. Walking, cycling and photography all are part of what I do out-of-doors and, hopefully, they will continue to inspire me to keep adding entries on here. Of course, there needs to be something of interest to you, dear reader, too and I hope that's the case. Thanks for coming.

Changes behind the scenes

28th April 2008

The weather over the weekend wasn’t so bad from, apart maybe from a wet start on Sunday. Even though I knew that I should have done so, I still didn’t head out to the hills, even the ones not far from me. Technology was at least partly to blame for this: I have managed to spent much of my time preparing the next version of the site’s photo gallery. On the surface, there shouldn’t many changes but it’s away from the eyes of the visitor that the real changes will have been made. The current XML-fed Perl/PHP powered edifice is to be replaced by a MySQL-fed PHP based one that might be more responsive to the user. We shall see about that but it has been enough fun building it all myself that the outdoors weren’t "graced" by my presence. I’ll try and get it done soon between everything else that needs doing so that a bank holiday weekend getaway can be organised. Sunshine and showers may be what’s promised by the forecast but the sun’s lighting up the landscape will hopefully wipe away memories of any damp irritations.
