War Memorial, The Slopes, Buxton, Derbyshire, England

One thing that has to strike anyone about Buxton is the amount of civic-mindedness there was for such a modestly-sized place. Apparently, there was more than the Duke of Devonshire involved and the result is that the Slopes got landscaped too, hardly a surprise perhaps given their proximity to the Crescent and Buxton's main spa well (St. Anne's). Being laid out in 1811, they predate the Pavilion Gardens too and continue to dominate the heart of Buxton to this very day. They provided a good site for the war memorial in the photo too, a very recent addition in light of the temperate 28° C spring that has been known since Celtic and Roman times.
