With all its contrasty blueness, I was left wondering if I would leave this photo in the gallery and, so far, I have. If anything, it shows that anyone walking from Zermatt towards Chamonix hardly is going to avoid glacier travel with all that involves. Zmuttgletcher may not be what it was once so I reckon that the higher patch of ice is the more substantial Stockjigletscher. My plan was never to so near glaciers and I was happy to turn back towards Zermatt after the delightful sights I already had seen. The rocky slopes rising up to the left lead all the way to the top of the Matterhorn and that was one of the sights to behold. If I wanted a higher level return to Zermatt, paths leading off to the right would have taken me that way and the more adventurous would head in that direction to reach the Schönbielhutte, possibly as part of the Haute Route to Chamonix or the Tour of the Matterhorn.
