It can be amazing how we Irish often fail to see the potential of attractive locations within our own country. Just imagine a public house on the side of the main Killarney to Kenmare road, part of the famed Ring of Kerry route, and with a lake across the road together with extensive views of Macgillycuddy's Reeks and other nearby hills. That would have to be superbly located both for the scenery and the tourist traffic but the one, a fine two storey construction next to Looscaunagh is not only closed but has fallen into dereliction. Quite how the owners, sheep framers by appearances, have failed to see the possibilities of the site is beyond the understanding of the outsider but they made just not appreciate how special is the area where they live. In fact, the property has been fenced off, seemingly to stop the occasional traveller exploring the enticing vistas that lie behind it. The photo should show you what I mean with its panoramic view of Mullach to the left with a number of the Reeks to its right. Now may not be the time to be developing a tourism business but it has been a travesty to allow the more favourable times pass by without any attempt to capitalise on what is hereabouts.
