Simonstone Pots, Kettlewell, North Yorkshire, England

Years of rain have taken their toll on the limestone and the result is the formation of depressions called shake holes following the collapse of underground caverns. With that sort of thing in mind, I tend to avoid stepping into them and stick with more level ground. Kettlewell. Even so, I was out among them of a July evening enjoying the way the sun played upon the empty countryside and relaxing in the space while trying to stick to rights of way, not always easy given that there so many of them and field navigation is never a strength of mine either. The only saving grace is that you are less likely to be caught if you stray so you at least can compose yourself and take your time to correct any misdemeanours. Much of it is now access land so straying is no long illegal but that's never an excuse for getting yourself lost.
