The regaining of the powers of an absolute monarch by Gustav III in a coup may have set him on the road towards a grim end. This may have been the Age of the Enlightenment, and these ideas appealed to Gustav III, but a costly war against Russia stirred up a deal of opposition. Then, he was assassinated in 1792 during a masked ball at the Opera House by a nobleman named Captain Anckarström, who subsequently was executed for the crime.
