Scales, Mellbreak & Crummock Water, Buttermere, Cumbria, England

The morning after I captured this scene, I wondered at much wilder Crummock Water felt than its near neighbour Buttermere. Maybe that was because it was flanked on one side by Grasmoor with the lower Mellbreak doing a similar job on the other side. Sadly, increasing cloud cover meant that I didn't have the lighting to go with such a prospect and this is one of the first of many photos from a weekend visit to Buttermere. Crummock Water does make an appearance, but it is the surrounding fells and the broken cloud overhead that catch most of the attention. At the left is the end of Scales, essentially the lower slopes of Red Crag, with the aforementioned Mellbreak across from it. Looking at this, you might think that no one frequented the area, but plenty of folk were pottering about that afternoon and there was ample room for all of us.
