Often, it is said that the history of York is the history of England. Its being England's second most important city until the advent of the Industrial Revolution, which incidentally largely by-passed the city, almost ensures this though lack of upheavals in recent centuries must have a part to play too. To this very day, there is still a lot of history around: the medieval street plan around the Shambles and the Minster, Norse artefacts and so much more.
