If the previous day’s planned walk had taken me over three or four fell tops as planned, then I would have been descending these slopes to reach the shore of Crummock Water or some other equally low level location. Since that was not what happened, I am being tempted by the prospect of visiting it be going another way that remains within the limits of my albeit increasing fitness. It is those vistas that closely packed contours on a map suggest in a tantalising manner that would be reward. Ennerdale is just to the other side of the fell with Great Gable at its head. Then, there could be other possibilities in this very crumpled part of Cumbria and Scafell Pike could be among them if it is not too hidden away from view.
