Fountains Fell from Silverdale, North Yorkshire, England

On its way from Malham Tarn to Horton-in-Ribblesdale, the Pennine Way goes over not one but two hills. The first of these is Fountains Fell, a name that suggests a connection to the Fountains Abbey near Ripon. That Cistercian foundation was a former landowner in this area. When going over the fell, you will see warnings appropriate to an area where coal mining used to take place. These days, the demand for coal is such that mining is unjustified, leaving the area for appreciation of its peace and quiet by hillwalkers. This is the view south-east from Dale Head farm, whose buildings you might see in the photo.
