Roman Gardens, Chester, England

Chester has quite a mix of historical remnants with some in ruins, others in a good state of repair and more in current usage. The periods represented include Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Tudor and Victorian times among others. What you find in the photo is a collection of artefacts dating from the first of these collected from other sites in Cheshire in a garden of a far newer vintage. One of these is a hypocaust, an underfloor heating arrangement that the Romans used to thwart any chill brought by a cooler climate than that to which they must have been accustomed. Thinking about it now, I wonder if they realised what they were leaving after them or how long it would take others to start to appreciate the inheritance.
