Church of St. James and St. Paul, Marton, Cheshire, England

Church of St. James and St. Paul, Marton, Cheshire, England

Though a few miles further south along the A34, Marton fits into the same pattern of being a pretty place with a fascinating church as Siddington. Here, you'll find another collection of interesting houses but, again, it is the church that is the main curiosity. In fact, it is even more interesting than Siddington's church because it is one of a pair of churches in Cheshire that are the oldest in Europe! Unlike its counterpart at Siddington, the original structure has remained untouched apart from sympathetic Victorian refurbishment. It so happens that the simple pattern and stoutness of the oak framing is what gives away its medieval origins and makes it worthy of a visit.
