For all the world, it looks as if the powers-that-be chose to sacrifice Longdendale to the needs of an industrialised society. The first sign of this would seem to have been the construction of the first railway between Manchester and Sheffield, the now defunct Woodhead line. That was followed by the reservoirs that persist to this day under the management of United Utilities. The previous onslaughts can be naturalised over time, but it is the present of a line of electricity pylons that really makes it tricky to feel as if you are out in the wilds while on a visit here. While visually intrusive, they also make photography more challenging when you want capture a more natural scene like what you see above. It was Good Friday in 2002 when I was there to capture the above and the hazy sunshine was a challenge too. I hope that the photo showed you what I bothered, and it wasn't exactly in the penitential spirit of Passiontide, either. Now that I think of it, it might be an idea to carry my bicycle here for a revisit and I might get to having another go at capturing views over reservoirs like the Rhodeswood one above.
