Gullfoss, Iceland

Gullfoss, Iceland

Gullfoss is the largest set of waterfalls that I ever have met and came as a surprise to me at the time. That probably reflected the spontaneity of my trip to Iceland and the fact that my oversleeping scuttled other plans that I had. In comparison with others, the day coach trip left at a more civilised time and allowed the seeing of numerous sights on a day blessed by the best weather of the trip. Some of those are also to be seen in this album.

Such was the flow of water at Gullfoss that clouds of spray were inevitable and spattered my camera lens. Sadly, that left me needing to try some remediation during the processing of this photo and my indecision regarding the effectiveness of my efforts may result in a replacement with another one in time. For now though, I will leave things as they are since the composition pleases me and the whiteness of the water really is striking, as are the clouds forming above the flow. A lens cloth is sure to see more use should I visit something like this again.

Quite how the falls became known as golden in Icelandic is beyond but no one can doubt their drama. That would explain how well visited they are and how suggested hydroelectric schemes meet much opposition. It is thanks to the efforts of Sigríður Tómasdóttir and others that we still have Gullfoss to experience in this way, and it is part of a day tour called the Golden Circle, a slightly different excursion to the one that I enjoyed.
