Þingvellir & River Öxará, Þingvellir National Park, Iceland

For all its feel as an outpost in a largely empty landscape, Þingvellir is a place of cultural as well as natural significance. After all, the name means "Parliament Plains" and the latter part of the description is apt when you see what is in the photo. The Alþing met here from around 930 until 1798 and a law passed in 1928 placed the area into state ownership for perpetuity. It also is a national park and a calling point for anyone following the Golden Circle tour.
