Campanile, Parliament Square, Trinity College, Dublin, Éire

Ireland's oldest university, Trinity College Dublin, was founded by Queen Elizabeth in 1591 on the site of a dissolved monastery outside the city's walls. There were plans for other constituent colleges of the University of Dublin, but these never came to pass, and we now have just Trinity on its own campus in the heart of Dublin. This limitation never harmed its history since it has had many notable alumni: names like Goldsmith, Swift, Grattan, Wilde and Synge are just a sample.

Much of its architecture dates from the mid-eighteenth century and its construction got financed by the contemporary Irish Parliament. Among the distinctive buildings is one of Dublin's most photographed landmarks, and it possibly was built on the site of a medieval priory church. This is the Campanile that you see pictured above from within Parliament Square.
