Cuskinny Marsh Nature Reserve, located not far east of Cobh on Great Island in Cork Harbour, is a compact ecological site known for its array of habitats, including lake, swamp, grassland, and woodland environments, making it significant for local nature conservation. Managed by BirdWatch Ireland, the reserve is a valuable spot for nature enthusiasts, especially bird watchers. In spring and summer, it hosts breeding birds such as Mallard, Sedge Warbler, and Willow Warbler. Visitors can enjoy observing these species along with a variety of flowers and insects. The reserve is particularly remarkable for offering exploration of multiple ecosystems in a small area, enhancing its appeal for those interested in wildlife and conservation.
It was on a serendipitous jaunt around Great Island that I came to pass this place. The circuit started and ended in Cobh before heading east on a day that ostensibly belied the change of season from summer to autumn; many were out along the seashore as if summer holidays were ongoing, though all of this activity now came after the completion of a schoolday. My destination was Marloag Point before I headed for the north shore of the island and then through the centre to Cobh again. That ending was not my first choice, but fading daylight turned me against other options.
