Newfoundland Bay, Upper Lake, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Éire

There are some odd names around Killarney and the Upper Lake's Newfoundland Bay is but one of them. After all, the waters flow from here through The Long Range before entering Muckross Lake. Add to that names for hills like Purple Mountain, and it looks as if this is an area where names weren't wasted on every hump and bump by the native Irish in older times. Believe it or not, the stony hump in the photo has no name if cartographers did not miss anything and there have been complaints about the due care and attention of the OSi in this regard. Faulty anglicisations have had their part to play too with Tomies Mountain (more literal translation from Irish the Tomies). Regardless of naming discrepancies and omissions, you can enjoy boat rides that take in the lakes of Killarney, from Muckross through to the Upper Lake. It's easy to ignore nomenclature problems when the scenery is this good.
