St. Nicholas

The building that you see above remains in use as a Church of Ireland place of worship and has done so since 1807, but it is on a site with a longer religious history than that. In fact, that dates back to 1315 when an Augustinian monastery was founded on the site by the Earl of Kildare. The suppression of monasteries during the sixteenth century meant that the complex fell into disuse until it was brought into its current use. Much of the original structure from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries is incorporated into the present day structure, so there is enough for anyone with an interest in antiquities to encourage a visit.
