Håkonshallen, Bergenhus Festning, Bergen, Hordaland, Norway

This is one of two photos in the album of Bergen's former military fort. Like its partner, it too is a more intimate study from the last morning of my 2016 Norwegian trip. Though it may look like part of a medieval cathedral because of its Gothic windows, it in fact was built by King Håkan Håkonsson for the coronation and wedding of his son Magnus Lagabøboter. It originally was a three-storey building with a caller for provisions, a middle storey for living quarters and the top floor being the ceremonial hall. After use as a corn store for a number of centuries and damage during the second world war, the building has been restored and decorated with paintings by Gerhard Munthe.
