Hun Ligger, Bjørvika, Oslo, Norway

This artistic installation in the waters near Oslo's Opera House grabbed my attention for it reminded me of Iceland. In fact, I was to believe that it was like a sculpture that I saw during that trip at the end of July 2015 but perusal of photos now challenges that recollection. Maybe I mixed up Reykjavík's Harpa and its Sun Voyager given the similarities of the light under which I saw all of these.

The Oslo sculpture is based on a painting by Caspar David Friedrich called Das Eismeer (The Sea of Ice). That shows a shipwreck in the frozen fastness of the Arctic Ocean where so many voyages of exploration foundered. Given that part of Noway lies within the Arctic Circle, that inspiration is somewhat apt, and Hun Ligger is the Norwegian for She Lies. Though floating on the tide, the installation is a permanent one though its orientation varies.
