Located on a prominent mound near Kingussie, Ruthven Barracks stands on a site first fortified in the 13th century by Clan Comyn and later held by figures such as the "Wolf of Badenoch". The medieval stronghold witnessed turbulent centuries, changing hands and undergoing sieges, before being replaced by the present barracks built by the British government after the 1715 Jacobite rising to enforce control over the region. Completed around 1721, the complex featured two main blocks, defensive walls, bastions, and later stables for mounted troops. It withstood Jacobite attack in 1745, but was captured and burnt the following year, after which it was abandoned and left to decay. Today, visitors can explore the ruins, which retain much of their original layout.
