Here is a photo of what you can see if you look east from the top of Calton Hill towards Holyrood Park. Green surroundings may dominate, but there is plenty of built heritage too. The Palace of Holyroodhouse best fits the description but both the Scottish Parliament and Dynamic Earth are to be found nearby to give the area a more contemporary feel. What remains timeless are the crags of Holyrood Park with both the escarpment of Salisbury Crags and the 251-metre-high volcanic plug of Arthur’s Seat drawing many a visitor. Both offer views of the surrounding city and beyond so a set of binoculars may find a use. If you keep down off the tops, you may be able to convince yourself that you are outside a city’s boundaries. In doing so, you may come to realise why some Glaswegians may refer to Edinburgh derisively as a network of villages. There is a lot to be said for that feel though.
