Nearly two decades ago, any attempt at photographic capture of the Scott Monument may have ended in disappointment due to its 1998-9 refurbishment. Since then, any then newly piebald pieces have had their opportunity to darken in colour to blend with the rest of the structure. An internal spiral staircase allows you to climb to the very top of this memorial to Sir Walter Scott if you wish. July 1999 saw me take that opportunity and, despite my not having the best head for heights, I made it to the top but steadier nerves would have enhanced my enjoyment of the vistas. If vertigo is a big problem for you, I can suggest the Camera Obscura at the top of the Royal Mile as a less scary and equally intriguing alternative. One thing that Edinburgh doesn't lack is vantage points so here are two more: Arthur's Seat or the Salisbury Crags in Holyrood Park. Yes, you do need a certain level of fitness and sure-footedness, but the panoramas are still there for the partaking.
