Craignure Bay, Isle of Mull, Scotland

Mull has more than one ferry departure point and Craignure is where the ferry connection with Oban arrives and departs. This photo shows you what is ahead on the final approach to Mull from Oban, and it is clear how small Craignure is in comparison with the brooding hills rising up behind it. Many choose to get on buses for places such as Tobermory, the island's main town, or Fionnphort, where a ferry crossing to Iona can be made. When those leave, all is quiet around Craignure until they arrive again to meet the next ferry.

With Torosay Castle and Duart Castle nearby, it can feel an overlooked spot, but it is those nearby hills that intrigue me. In fact, it is possible to undertake a sort of horseshoe walk that takes in Maol nan Uan, Dùn da Ghaoithe, Beinn Thunacaraidh, Beinn Mheadhan, Beinn Chreagach Mòr, Beinn Chreagach Bheag and Maol Buidhe. Behind all those nestles Glen Forsa with Beinn Talaidh near its head. Wandering among Mull's central hills begins here and the idea of less trampled hills appeals to me though the terrain may be rougher and wilder as a result. For that reason, ambitions need tight control.
