The views from Duart Point easily explain why a castle got built here. Firstly, being able to see who is coming your way has defensive advantages and there is the aspect of controlling shipping traffic too. In our quieter times, we can relish those vistas and enjoy the peace and quiet that abounds here. Identifying what you are seeing is a bigger task and I certainly struggled with photos that I had taken on my first visit in June 1999. A 35 mm fixed lens on a compact film camera did not help with resolving power like my present day cameras. What helps here is the lighthouse on Eilean Musdile at the tail end of Lismore. To its right would be the coastline around Dunbeg, between Oban and Connel, so that brings about the possibility of looking over a less than visible Loch Etive towards the likes of Ben Cruachan. Such deduction amazes me now but better maps and further explorations have brought this far. More would cement the proposition, of course.
