Sound of Kerrera, Oban, Argyll & Bute, Scotland

Sound of Kerrera, Oban, Argyll & Bute, Scotland

There is a regular twelve-person passenger ferry across the Sound of Kerrera that can take a vehicle for an islander; no visitor needs one on an island this small. Goods and mail are conveyed for residents too, but I am under the impression that bicycles are conveyed for anyone with extra runs when there are more passengers than the vessel can take on a single crossing. On both of my visits, return fares were paid on the way back and what was an adult fare of £3 on my first ever trip in November 2002 has become £4.50 now, not a major increase given the length of time between the two. That a crossing grants you views like this northward one towards an Oban esplanade whose size is much diminished by distance is worth the outlay alone. What can be seen from Kerrera itself makes it even better value.
