Roineabhal, Rodel, Harris, Western Isles, Scotland

A ferry crossing of the Sound of Harris is a longer endeavour than the actual distance might lead you to believe. It is the presence of many rocky prominences that scarcely break the surface of the sea that makes this a hazardous place for shipping. For that reason, the Calmac ferry has to weave its way through a necessarily well waymarked course. As it does so, it allows plenty of time to sample views like the one that you see here, and they look all the better on a sunny day like the one that I enjoyed. That tidal conditions allowed the ferry to run as timetable also made a long journey from Harris to South Uist work as hoped.
