Le Rhône, Geneva, Switzerland

This photo was taken on the last morning of my September 2015 trip to Switzerland before I headed off to the airport after a stay that brought more than its fair share of delights. A short train ride got me to the airport not long afterwards, and I was not to lose sight of the mountains you see looming behind the buildings above either; if anything, there is an even better of the Jura from there. Geneva's location is such that you are seeing into France when peering at any upthrusts of ground that surround it. Quite how Geneva has remained outside France at all amazes me, and it is little surprise that French is the main language you hear spoken. Fluency in English is common too and this is a very international city with the U.N. having its European HQ there and CERN nearby.

The Rhône is one of Europe's major rivers, rising in Switzerland and flowing into the Mediterranean at the Camargue delta in France. Here, it is seen as a broad outflow from Lac Léman (also known as Lake Geneva) though it arises from the Rhonegletscher near Oberwald before then flowing into the same lake. In Geneva, there are several river crossings with some of them car free and there is one of these to be seen here with the exhibition centre Cité du Temps behind it. Dwarfed by surrounding office blocks, many of which being homes to banking operations, it has a permanent Swiss watch display along with other industrial exhibitions from time to time.
