Unterrothorn & Oberrothorn, Zermatt, Valais, Switzerland

To identify mountains that appear in photos, I have begun to realise that you sometimes have to consider what seems unlikely to you and look at things from different vantage points. When I am out walking, that is not something that I find that easy to do: stopping and trying to work out the surroundings while out there. Other matters intrude such as not staying overlong where I am and missing my way home as a result. The consequence is that I often end up looking at photos with a map beside me to work what is in them after the event and so it has been with the ones in this album.

To come to what is in this photo, Unterrothorn rises above an out of sight Zermatt and has a ski lift station at its summit. Immediately behind it and still with its rocky face showing is Oberrothorn, which I had confused with Rimpfischorn in my earnestness. That is leftmost of the white-sheeted rocky prominences behind Oberrothorn with Strahlhorn in the middle and the distinctive Adlerhorn to the right. With where the sun was in the sky, this trio really caught my eye and gave a lot of pleasure on the return of my circular walk beneath the lofty Matterhorn. That they are nearly due south from Saas-Fee tells how far you can see around here so long as you are armed with a map that shows you such things.
