Plas Newydd, Llangollen, Denbighshire, Wales

What saved this cottage for posterity was its being the home of the Ladies of Llangollen, two upper class Anglo-Irish women who left their homes to spend their lives together. One was Eleanor Charlotte Butler and the other was Sarah Ponsonby with both meeting around the former's home in County Kilkenny. The Irish broadcaster, RTÉ, featured a documentary on their lives and the house and ground now are owned and operated by Denbighshire County Council, so they are open to the public. While the ladies' lives may have been mundane in many ways, their chosen domestic arrangement and their love of learning attracted a lot of attention and some notable visitors from across Britain and Europe too.
