In some ways, the sunshine takes away from any sense that there is the air of a ruin about what you see in this image. Sadly, there is graffiti too but the distance at which everything is viewed diminishes that too. In fact, walking around Land's End and other parts of the coast while on the way to the Golden Gate Bridge does bring one past several locations blighted by graffiti, some of which were former military installations. It is yet another reminder of how gritty San Francisco can be.

However, there was a time when things felt more upbeat around here. Before it burned to the ground in 1966, there was even a large building housing a private swimming pool complex developed by wealthy entrepreneur and former San Francisco mayor Adolph Sutro. The water came from the sea and pumped in at time timers of low tide. The amenity was served by two railways in its heyday, with both now done the way of the swimming baths, though you may find yourself strolling along trails where they once ran. Financial overreach saw the end of the whole enterprise after a matter of decades.
